The Project Team

Kate Melhuish, Principal Investigator. Kate is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Texas State University. Her primary research interest is in the development of instruments (assessments, measures, observation protocols) that promote a focus on student thinking. This work includes lead developer/researcher of the The Group Theory Concept Assessment and the Math Habits Tool, and part of the research team on the Modelling Self-Efficacy assessment and Real Analysis Comprehension Tests. As a result of research on these instruments, Kate also develops interventions, supports, and follow-up studies to enlarge our knowledge as a field around student thinking and mathematics instruction that richly promote student-driven classrooms. Ruth Heaton, co-Principal Investigator

M. Alejandra Sorto, co-Principal Investigator. M. Alejandra Sorto received her Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 2004 in Mathematics Education. She is currently a faculty member of the Mathematics Department at Texas State University. Her research focuses on the preparation of teachers in the area of Statistics, the impact of professional development, and comparative studies in Latin-America and Africa. In particular, she is interested in developing instruments to measure content knowledge for teaching, teaching quality and analyzing its effect on student achievement. She has worked with governments of Brazil, Chile, Peru, Dominican Republic, Honduras, and Guatemala to help improve the preparation of teachers in mathematics and develop educational standards. In 2011 the National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded her a CAREER research grant to investigate the Mathematics instruction of English language learners in the state of Texas. Eva Thanheiser, co-Principal Investigator, Associate Professor in the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Portland State University. Eva received her PhD from the joint PhD program at San Diego State University and UCSD. At Portland State University Eva teaches mathematics content courses for elementary and middle-school teachers as well as courses for Ph.D. students in mathematics education and senior capstone courses for mathematics majors on mathematics and society. Eva’s work has centered around pre and in-service teacher knowledge, development of knowledge and motivation to engage. More recently Eva has focussed on humanizing mathematics and teaching mathematics for social justice (TMfSJ) at all levels (K – College). Eva is especially interested in a focus on examining/learning mathematics in and through social justice contexts. As such she is redesigning mathematics content courses to be taught in the context of mathematics for social justice. Eva’s work also focuses on (1) examining in-service teacher professional development experiences and their effects especially in the context of the Math Studio Professional Development (2) Examining in-depth various teaching routines included in the Math Habits Tool, (3) Exploring equity and access to mathematics through working with the Math Habits Tool, and (4) Working with practitioners on using the Math Habits Tool to provide formative feedback to teachers.
